How I built an AI agent to send me a morning brief

I wanted a calmer way to start the day. So I built a Notion AI agent that drops a personalized morning brief straight into my Slack: schedule, open loops, inbox triage, all of it.

For a long time, my mornings were a scramble. Open laptop. Open calendar. Open four Slack channels. Open the inbox I'd been avoiding. Try to remember what I said I'd do today. Make coffee somewhere in there.

I kept saying I wanted a calmer way to start the day. Something that would just hand me the picture, instead of me having to assemble it.

I went to one Willa event on building with AI agents and walked out thinking, the thing I've been describing is just an agent. Not a product. Not a startup. A small tool for me.

So I built it.

My agent lives in Notion AI and posts into a private Slack channel I call #morning-brief. Every morning before I sit down, it drops in a single message: today at a glance, my schedule with the tradeoffs called out, open loops from my Notion workspace, and a sample of inbox items that actually need a reply, each with a suggested action.

The build itself was iterative. I started by writing the brief I wished someone would send me, then worked backwards. What sources does it need to read? Calendar, Notion task database, email. What does it need to decide? What is a real commitment vs. a maybe, which emails are actually time-sensitive, where I should protect focus. I gave the agent the structure I wanted, the tone I wanted ('clear, a little dry, never cheerful before 9am'), and let it run.

It is small. It is also the first time in a long time that a piece of software I use every single day was built specifically for me, by me. My mornings feel different now.
