What Is ChatGPT's Intelligent UI? A GPT-6 Guide (2026)

Quick answer
Intelligent UI is ChatGPT's new answer format, launched with GPT-6 on October 7, 2026, that mixes text with interactive elements like editable charts, tappable buttons, and custom calculators, chosen automatically to fit your question. It works on every plan, including Free, in the Chat tab. You can dial the visuals down in Personalization settings.
ChatGPT looks different this week, and it is not your imagination. On October 7, 2026, OpenAI released GPT-6 along with a new interface called Intelligent UI, and by October 8 the rollout reached every plan, including Free. Answers can now arrive as editable charts, tappable buttons, diagrams, and small custom tools instead of plain paragraphs. Most of the launch coverage was written for people who care about model benchmarks. This guide is for everyone else: what Intelligent UI actually is, who gets which version of GPT-6, and how to put the new format to work without letting it distract you.
What is ChatGPT's Intelligent UI?
Intelligent UI is a new answer format in ChatGPT, powered by GPT-6, that mixes text with visuals and interactive elements. According to OpenAI's help documentation, the model chooses the layout based on your question. Ask it to compare two options and it may place them side by side. Ask how something works and you may get a diagram you can click through. Ask a math-shaped question and you may get a working calculator with controls you can adjust, no re-prompting required. And when plain text is the most useful answer, it still gives you plain text.
In the launch demo covered by TechCrunch, a product manager asked ChatGPT to explain how an airplane wing generates lift and got interactive diagrams back. Other examples included recipe visuals, a multi-day hiking map, and a personal savings calculator. OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan explained the thinking: ChatGPT "has predominantly been a text-based interface," and "the most helpful answers aren't just text."
One more change ships alongside the visuals. Per OpenAI's release notes, GPT-6 can start answering before it finishes thinking or using tools, then fold new findings into the response as they arrive. In practice, you spend less time watching a spinner.
Who gets Intelligent UI, and what are Sol, Luna, and Astra?
Everyone gets it, which is rare for an OpenAI launch. The version of GPT-6 behind it depends on your plan, per the release notes:
- Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise accounts use GPT-6 Sol, live since October 7. Enterprise access depends on what your workspace admin has turned on.
- Free and Go accounts use GPT-6 Luna, which started rolling out October 8. Luna supports Intelligent UI too, so you do not need a paid plan to get interactive answers.
- Pro's heavy reasoning option runs GPT-6 Astra, and Astra does not support Intelligent UI. Choose it and your answers come back as regular text.
Intelligent UI works across the reasoning effort settings, from Instant through Extra High, but only in the Chat tab. The Work tab and Voice do not have it, and OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex are not changing with this release. If Astra sounds familiar, it is the same model that powers Dots, OpenAI's always-on agents, which we covered in OpenAI Dots, Explained.
How can you use interactive answers at work?
The feature is only as useful as the questions you bring it. OpenAI's stated goal is making complex topics easier to learn, but the work payoff shows up when you stop asking for text and start asking for the tool you actually need. Five patterns worth trying this week, each with a prompt you can adapt:
Compare options before a decision. Comparisons now come back laid out side by side instead of buried in paragraphs. Try: "Compare these two email platforms for a 20-person nonprofit on price, onboarding time, and integrations, side by side." Works just as well for vendors, venues, or job offers.
Ask for a calculator instead of opening a spreadsheet. This is the sleeper feature for ops and event work. Try: "Build me a budget calculator for a 60-person workshop with adjustable headcount, per-person catering cost, and venue cost." You can adjust the numbers live in the answer instead of re-prompting ten times.
Work through a checklist in one sitting. Ask for an interactive checklist for a launch, an onboarding week, or an event run-of-show, and tick items off as you go. One catch from OpenAI's docs: elements like checklists can keep their state when you refresh that chat, but the state does not carry into other conversations. Finish the list where you started it.
Learn how something works before the meeting. The airplane-wing demo is the template. Before you sit down with an engineering team or a data analyst, ask for an interactive diagram of the system you will be discussing. Poking at a diagram for three minutes beats nodding along for thirty.
Pressure-test a plan visually. Hand it your content calendar, hiring ramp, or savings goal and ask for an editable chart. Dragging a number and watching the chart move will surface problems that a paragraph never would.
How do you tone the visuals down?
Not everyone wants buttons in their answers, and OpenAI built in three levers:
- Ask in the chat. "Just give me text" or "put that in a short table" works for the conversation you are in.
- Set custom instructions. In settings, you can state standing preferences, like shorter summaries or tables for comparisons. The exact format can still vary.
- Switch to Simple formatting. On the web, go to Personalization, then Formatting and visuals, then choose Simple. OpenAI notes that some visuals and interactive elements may still appear, so there is no complete off switch right now.
What are the catches?
A few honest ones. Intelligent UI lives in the Chat tab only, so Work and Voice stay text for now. Astra reasoning answers skip the visuals. Interactive state is per-conversation, so a half-finished checklist does not follow you to a new chat. And the big one: a polished calculator is still model output. GPT-6 chose the format, but the numbers inside it deserve the same scrutiny as any AI answer, especially before they land in a deck or a budget. Interactive answers make checking easier, not optional. We wrote about keeping that muscle strong in How to Keep Your Judgment Sharp in the AI Era.
Key takeaways
- Intelligent UI launched with GPT-6 on October 7, 2026, and reached Free and Go plans on October 8, so every ChatGPT user has it now.
- Answers can include editable charts, side-by-side comparisons, calculators, diagrams, and checklists, with the model choosing the format automatically.
- Paid plans run GPT-6 Sol and free plans run GPT-6 Luna, and both support interactive answers, so there is no paywall on this one.
- It works only in the Chat tab, not in Work or Voice, and Pro's Astra reasoning option returns plain text.
- You can reduce the visuals under Personalization, then Formatting and visuals, then Simple, though some elements may still appear.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT's Intelligent UI free?
Yes. Free and Go plans got Intelligent UI starting October 8, 2026, running on the GPT-6 Luna model. Paid plans got it a day earlier on GPT-6 Sol. There is no extra charge on any plan.
What is the difference between GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna?
Sol is the everyday GPT-6 model for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, while Luna is the version serving Free and Go users. Both support Intelligent UI. OpenAI has not published a detailed capability comparison between the two.
Can I turn off Intelligent UI?
Mostly. On the web, go to Personalization, then Formatting and visuals, and choose Simple to reduce visuals, or set custom instructions asking for text answers. OpenAI notes some visuals and interactive elements may still appear, so there is no complete off switch yet.
Does Intelligent UI work in ChatGPT Voice or the Work tab?
No. Intelligent UI is available only in the Chat tab. Voice and the Work tab do not support it, and OpenAI says the models powering Work and Codex did not change with this release.
Why do I get plain text when I use Pro's reasoning mode?
Pro's heavy reasoning option runs on GPT-6 Astra, which does not support Intelligent UI. If you want interactive answers, use the standard GPT-6 Sol model instead of the Astra reasoning option.
